It all starts with a healthy gut Part 1

My wife and I have been on a health journey since we came together 12 years ago. Our microbiome is one of the well-known but elusive parts of said journey. Until recently, we left it up to the gods of food to direct how it worked, never realizing just how vital intestinal health is. Imagine my surprise at how the gut influences everything in my body- mood, health, cognitive function, energy level, food cravings, and a lot more. This awareness has sent us down a rabbit hole of digestive malaise, giving up our precious favorite foods for newfound freedom in our relationship with food. Although this first article is light and missing many details about microbiome health, we hope that some readers will find enlightenment on their path to wellness and look deeper into the mighty microbiome.
Imagine your gut as a bustling city, teeming with trillions of tiny residents—bacteria, fungi, and other microbes—all working together to keep the system running smoothly. This microscopic metropolis, known as your gut microbiome, is responsible for everything from digesting food and absorbing nutrients to boosting your mood and keeping your immune system in top shape. You feel energized, focused, and healthy when everything is in balance. But when things go off track? Chaos ensues—think bloating, brain fog, and even cranky moods.
A healthy gut microbiome isn’t just about digestion; it’s deeply connected to your brain, immune function, and emotions. Scientists call this the **gut-brain axis**, a superhighway of communication between your intestines and mind. Ever had “butterflies” in your stomach before a big event? That’s your gut talking! According to a 2019 study in *Nature Microbiology*, certain gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which help regulate mood and stress. So, if your gut is out of whack, it could literally be messing with your happiness! I can tell you that my mood swings and overall level of happiness have been tied to my microbiome.
On the immune front, about 70% of your immune system lives in your gut, making it a frontline defense against infections and inflammation. Research in The Journal of Immunology highlights how a diverse gut microbiome helps train your immune system to recognize friends from foes, reducing the risk of autoimmune conditions and chronic diseases. IBS, Crohn's, Flu, and other issues are all tied to gut health, so maybe reconsider that late-night craving for Taco Bell!
Food plays a starring role in gut health. Fiber-rich foods like leafy greens, bananas, and whole grains feed beneficial bacteria. In contrast, processed foods and excess sugar can wipe out the good guys, allowing harmful bacteria to take over. Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha are like VIP passes for friendly microbes, helping them thrive and keep everything in balance. This is just the touchstone of the demands of Flora, as we will delve into SIBO, SIFO, and other issues in the next article.
So, what happens when your gut is out of balance? You might experience bloating, indigestion, skin issues, or even unexplained fatigue. In fact, a 2021 study in Cell Metabolism found that an imbalanced gut microbiome can contribute to metabolic disorders, weight gain, and even sleep disturbances. What else happens? I can tell you about mood swings or maybe waking up on the wrong side of the bed, but I think we have all been there.
The good news? You have the power to support your gut every single day. Eating various colorful, fiber-packed foods, managing stress, getting enough sleep, and even spending time in nature (hello, earthing!) can all contribute to a happy, balanced gut. And trust me, when your gut is happy, you are happy.
